In the Cecil Parrott translation, Svejk's trademark phrase is 'humbly report, sir. At first I didn't like the change. As I continued. The difference in meaning is huge. I speak German, so the use of the terms 'putzfleck' works MUCH better than Parrott's use of 'batman', which no longer retains much of its original meaning in English thanks to the comic book hero of the same name. In these "politically correct"" times Jaroslav Hasek and his book have been charged at times by a few individuals as being antisemitic.

Shrewd, affable, possessed of an unerring talent for finding himself in and extricating himself from the most fitfully chaotic and absurd situations, Svejk represents, in his instinct for survival, all those human values which stand opposed to the utter futility of warfare. Jaroslav Hasek planned to write six books but passed away before completing Book Four. That is why the book is considered unfinished. Yet, it can be argued the author, under pressure from his deteriorating health, indeed completed his thoughts and "closed the books" on the book that made him famous quite well. That target is something we all understand because we have to deal with it, no matter where we live , and thus the impact of this satire extends well beyond the particular social and political realities of the world it depicts.

Written in the s by a Czech veteran of the Austrian army who served in WWI, "Svejk" was and still is a unique masterpiece, but it's flaws are as gigantic as its virtues. Most importantly, it is too long. This translation runs to three volumes and no joke can go on that long.
It is a mystery why the authors of this kind of writing don't know when to wrap it up. I wish they had written plays instead, because an audience in a theater will only sit still for a finite interval.
However, this is a very funny novel, blacker than Catch, and sucks you into the innards of a military bureaucracy so insane that trains get lost, armies wander across the Balkans without orders, officers torture the common soldiers as ordinary discipline, and finding the next meal is the number one concern of all, from general to private. You would think that the soldiers could not endure any more cruelty or stupidity but then a civilian or two stumble through the scene and they are even more wretched and you realize, it can get worse.
And it does.

The book portrays the inner life of the citizens of an absolute monarchy very well, the secret police, the informers, the mindless propaganda glorifying the Lord Emperor. Since Svejk and his comrades are Czechs, unwilling subjects of Austria, their willingness to die for the Emperor is even less than that of the Austrian or Hungarian soldiers.
A note on the translation: Most readers won't notice that, and will be swept along laughing until the end of the book. Then they will note with dismay that there are two more volumes to go.
