I first wrote about the Borgias as an historical film. It was the second historical subject I had attempted — the first was Michael Collins, the film I made for Warner Brothers about the Irish guerrilla leader and the Irish War of Independence. On Michael Collins, I experienced the dilemma of the historical screenplay — the mass of material that has to be encapsulated within a two-hour time frame. So when Dreamworks suggested that I develop a Borgia project as a cable series for Showtime, I saw it as a unique opportunity to write a hour film, about power, religion and sex in the Renaissance period. It would be as lurid and dramatic as any Jacobean drama, but over four seasons, long enough to do justice to the complexity of the times and the family.

Wouldn't we see more of Rodrigo's arrangements for the papacy to be handed down to his son? Plotting with Cardinal Sforza and Machiavelli perhaps?

Trying to please the people so they'd accept it more when the time came?

Lucretia Borgia by Ferdinand Gregorovius

Wouldn't we see the plotting of the cardinals against Rodrigo? See them switch sides once Della Rovere came back? Why wouldn't we see the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci work for Cesare? Why wouldn't we see Lucrezia become the poisoner she is notoriously known to be?

Anyway, I could go on and on, but I won't. I know this is a skeleton of a script, and it seemed a little rushed. If only Neil Jordan was respected enough to have been allowed to finish his story properly. It was set to run for four seasons and that's what it needs to be.

VERY poor decision on the part of the execs. They could have had a built-in fan base for The Vatican if only they had respected the writer, cast and crew AND the viewers. Now there's only one way The Borgias fans will tune into Showtime and that is if the execs get some integrity and do the right thing! Unfortunately, this was not satisfying to me, and I want a fourth and final FULL season to conclude the story of the Borgia family.

This 2-hour script does not do the wonderful saga justice. While this covers the main beats of the never-to-be-realized season 4, it is obviously a rushed attempt to wrap up the storylines to the ultimate visual conclusion. Spoilers from here on out.

The main problem with the screenplay is that it does not give incestual siblings, Cesare or Lucrezia, enough screen time together after the gutwrenchingly epic final minute of the season 3 finale. One would expect, or hope even, to have the siblings discuss their feelings post-death of Alphonso aka the most satisfying death on the show since Juan.

Lucrezia's character was built up from a victim of her father's ambition to a player in her own right, so are we to expect that she was only capable of gaining her "freedom" via poisoning her brother and father, rather than by shrewdly manipulating them into doing what she wanted? After all the complaining she did in regards to her husband in season 3, her actions are not satisfactorily explained well with the dialog.

Besides, I can't be the only one who wanted to see the the fallout of their relationship being discovered by their family, but as this screenplay stands, it stays between them. The scenes between her and her roommate a character we don't give two cents about in a nunnery feel forced and out of place, as if it was an excuse for her and Cesare to NOT have many scenes together.

And what's more, she blames Cesare for her misfortune and the destruction caused by war in Italy, which seems like a cop out considering the fact it was she who seduced her brother in the first place and it was her choice to choose the witless Alphonso of Naples.

As I was reading her dialog, I was inwardly begging Neil Jordan to include a scene between the siblings where they put all their cards on the table and Cesare can take her to task for not taking responsibility for her actions. Alas, this was not to be.

You will mourn for the movie, even with this rough screenplay, for that scene alone. All in all, it is a seriously rough draft of a potential finale movie for the show. While it would have closed the show, it just brings to light how much of a mistake it would have truly been because we needed 10 more hours for the characters and story to end with any real satisfaction.

The series was expensive to produce, since we always did our utmost to do justice to the architecture, design and costume of the period, however free we allowed ourselves to be with the actual events. The ratings were steady, if not spectacular, but there was a large network of avid fans, who followed the machinations of the family, their loves, their losses, their tragedies with absolute devotion.

As a compromise I proposed a two-hour film, which would bring the story of the family to a satisfactory and apocalyptic conclusion. For a variety of reasons, mainly cost, Showtime decided not to proceed with the two-hour film. Filtering Exclude erotica Include mainstream erotica Include all erotica. About Publish Join Sign In.
