Page turner, so well structured, full of historical facts that will keep your head spinning after you have finished reading it. Columbus, a man that that will definatly keep researchers researching, writers writing and readers reading!
My only negative comment is the translation, i think a better job could have been done. I am about to read the portuguese version now One person found this helpful.
I was very excited to read this book after reading the description.
I do no regret reading it in anyway, but I can assure you that it did not satisfy my excitement. The book is basically, as the title of this review says, research presented in the form of a story. The flimsy story's only purpose is to drudge forward until the next large, solid, black chunk of research. The characters are sub par, but not the worst I've ever encountered. The puzzles though, are absolutely horrid in this piece and usually dispatched quickly, easily, or both. Here is a fictional example: Apesar das reviews um pouco negativas quanto a este livro, devo dizer que adorei!
Recomendo a leitura! Sep 04, Keith rated it liked it. Is it the translation or the original text? Thomas Noronha is a history scholar teaching a course in ancient languages and cryptography at Lisbon University when he approached by a mysterious New York foundation to thoroughly research all aspects of the discovery of Brazil. He soon finds himself immersed in a puzzling academic chase to find and unravel documents from the Age of Discovery and possibly solve a five-hundred-year-old conspiracy which may include the true identity of Christopher Columbus.
Was Columbus actually an explorer or an agent for one of the great superpowers of the sixteenth century? This is an interesting novel but with too much emphasis on the research specifics and not enough on character development and conflict solution for my taste. View all 3 comments. Feb 02, Maya rated it it was ok. The level of historical research and data in this book is impressive, and is by far its best asset.
The main theme the personality and origin of Christopher Columbus is a fascinating one. Unfortunately, that's about all I can say on the plus side.
The historical detail was too overwhelming and distracting, especially for those of us who like to actually retain what they read. Instead of contributing to the plot, it ended up detracting from it. The author could have achieved the same literary e The level of historical research and data in this book is impressive, and is by far its best asset. The author could have achieved the same literary effect with a much tighter, more concise description of the relevant historical events and documents.
As is, the "history" is starting to feel like padding that does not allow for a much-needed character and plot development.
Not surprisingly, the characters fall a bit flat, the plot and its ending are predictable, and the end is somewhat anti-climactic. It's an OK book, but it did not leave me with a burning desire to read more by the same author. Tenho duas coisas a confessar: Assim, comecei com baixas expetativas, e talvez tenha sido por isso que gostei do livro.
Jun 02, E. D Raiden rated it it was ok Shelves: Duvido que o livro venda tanto. Tem conceitos interessantes mas mal abordados a meu ver.
Read this for the research, it's worth it. The plot is kind of weak and the dialogues are somewhat "forced" and boring this is not a translation problem as I read portuguese original edition , but the historical part justifies reading this book. Keep in mind that this Dan Brown-like novel was translated from Portuguese and some of the characters and dialogue can be clumsy at times. However, the book's real treasure is the documented history that the author incorporates into the novel's story that will blow many readers away.
Most Portuguese are aware today's accepted version of Columbus' origins and mission is full of fallacies and forgeries. Columbus's life in Portugal and his connection to the Portuguese monarchs, along with their knowledge of lands to the west in the New World will make you rethink history.
Columbus will ever remain an enigmatic figure in the Age of Discoveries. Great book by Mr. Dos Santos, one of Portugal's best and most esteemed journalists.
Bem, mas foi o final que me conquistou: Mar 18, Heather rated it it was ok Shelves: I listened to this an audiobook - I always say this because I think that inevitably it has an effect on your experience with the book. I enjoyed some aspects of this book, but the basic plot points seem too basic for me.
Almost everything I would expect to have happen ended up happening. The characters were not deep at all, and the book certainly has a dim view of Americans at least the ones in the story aren't doing us any favors. I'm not a big flag-waver, but the stereotypes were off-putting. Perhaps the worst part about the book was the dialog - or, I should say, the sorry excuse for dialog.
Simply awful. Perhaps it was worse to listen to than it would've been to read silently, but truly - awful. Long diatribes by one character "educating" the other and this would happen over and over again , with the other character saying one or a few words in response every now and then to punctuate the lecture. I could barely stand to continue at one point.
Just write a non-fiction book and be done with it! The rest of the story outside of the historical mystery was pretty much worthless. I didn't like ANY of the characters at all, and the main character is just somewhat blah, and in the end, he makes no sense.
Codex , O: Jose Rodrigues Dos Santos: hackbus.info: Books
If he's such a genius code breaker, why could he see NONE of what occurred coming - he was so unbelievably naive, it was shocking.
I gave it two stars instead of one because there are some good ideas in there after all, I was taken in by the story summary on the cover , it just didn't deliver. Um livro que podera nao ser excelente Mas que e excelente para mim!
Adorei ler de novo ao fim de tantos anos Mar 22, Erica rated it it was ok. Because this author does that to an extreme, I can't give it any more than 2 stars, despite it's intriguing proposition of the true identity of Columbus. Gostei imenso de ler este livro. View 2 comments. Sep 08, Laura rated it did not like it Shelves: Reading this book was a waste of time.
I kept expecting it to get more exciting, but it didn't. Instead of a "DaVinci Code"-style thriller, it was more of a boring scholarly hunt through old documents. And when the "secret identity of Christopher Columbus" is revealed, I thought "who cares? Noioso, ripetitivo, inconcludente.
