Are you more likely to succeed if you decided to learn French just because you always wanted to learn another language or because you are moving to France for three months for work? Real projects … real "doing" approaches are how people learn. That's what you should be looking for in a book.

The most important part: Cognitive research shows that retention increases percent when learners are challenged to retrieve the information they just read. You ll spend two to three times as long practicing as reading.

They're all interactive, with an automated answer-checker that corrects your missteps and points you in the right direction when you stumble.

In practice, the book was pretty good for a beginner's guide to Javascript, but the online exercises, after about chapter 40 or so, were not up to the task of really teaching you how a javascript program fits together.

I had several problems with the exercises: All chapters used the same number and type of exercises, even when longer-form exercises would be more appropriate.

Pop-ups are used frequently and some exercises prompt the user to check their answer instead of testing it like a Codecademy course would. The user doesn't get to use a real syntax-highlighting editor like they would for a real project.

Despite my objections to the online exercises, I felt that the content of the book was useful and I feel like I learned a lot, but I'm not sure if it was worth the price over some of the better free online-only options.
