But I recall reading as a kid many maps encoded using this kind of approach, and liking them to bits. Still, the insight is in there, and the weaknesses are not too great to stop a determined or required reader.
The situation remains largely the same today, in France as in other countries.

The only way the book could be made better would be trough a third section on animation hinted at in the introduction to the English version. Part Two bring Originally published in French inSemiology of Graphics holds a significant place in the theory of information design. I’ve read Tafte books 2 years semiloogy and after that was unable to find anything interesting or new in the Visualization field. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. For people who grew up with Excell and quick graphs this text is a wonderful grounding in the structure and building blocks of information presentation.
I was especially interested in the typography of graphics, and the book doesn’t seem to give this topic much attention.
